An ancient gateway into the historical town of Chepstow

Monmouthshire has an extremely rich history within its County boundaries and Chestnut Lodges provides the perfect place for you to explore from.

If you are looking for castles and historical sites, then Monmouthshire abounds with them and they are within easy travelling distance of us here.

Tintern Abbey – A very atmospheric ruin, well worth visiting.  There are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat or drink very close by.

Chepstow Castle – Chepstow Castle is open to the public and holds regular events. Some of the Dr. Who 50th anniversary broadcast was filmed there, as well as scenes from the film Jabberwocky.

Across the road from the castle is the Chepstow Museum. Housed in a Georgian house, it has exhibits on Chepstow Castle, as well as the town’s salmon fishing and wine trade.

Usk Castle – Enchanting, romantic ruins overlook the pretty town of Usk, and the wide rider valley beyond.

Raglan Castle – Raglan Castle is one of the last true castles to be built in Wales, and was built for it’s beauty rather than battle.

Caldicot Castle –Caldicot Castle’s impressive structure is surrounded by an idyllic 55 acre country park. You will be able to travel through time and discover the home of Welsh castle life, from medieval times to the twentieth century.

Whilst you may enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside in Monmouthshire, should you desire a little more of the hustle and bustle of city life, then Cardiff (our Capital) is only 34 miles away, the historic city of Hereford 27 miles and the maritime city of Bristol a mere 26 miles.  Remember there is now no toll on either of the Severn Bridges!!!
